Know What to Say to Get the Look YOU Want on Your Wedding Day

Choosing any vendor or detail for your wedding day can be daunting. Lilac blush or rose blush, indoor or outdoor, small or big, roses or hydrangeas, whether or not to invite the cousins you met only once or people from work and so on... There are a lot of decisions to make. Some of the very most important decisions are your hair stylist, makeup artist, wedding dress and photographer. Yes all the other decisions will be photographed and seen by you and all your guests but the memories of your perfect hairstyle and breath taking beauty will be forever kept and displayed as photos. These are the images of you and your partners new life together and are forever a symbol of your perfect wedding day. No pressure right?! Below are some tips that can hopefully make at least a couple items easier to confidently check off your list. How do I find a makeup or hair artist? Referrals can't be beat! Ask who your friend used for her wedding if you loved her makeup or hair. Ask your photographer or other vendors who they have worked with or who they recommend. Even ask a photographer you maybe couldn't fit into the budget who does stunning editorial shoots what artists they work with. Or if you look online and find an artist in your area who is already booked or out of your price range... Ask them if they can recommend anyone. It never hurts to ask and only helps guide you into the right direction. Find reviews for the artists you are considering. I can not stress this enough. REVIEWS are key! Yes some artists may be greatly artistic but you want a PROFESSIONAL Artist. Someone who is consistent, reliable, 100% invested in their craft and knows their worth BUT most importantly knows how to listen to what you want and create the perfect look showcasing your personal style and beauty on your wedding day.

What do I ask?

It's hard to know what questions to ask outside of an artists availability and pricing. You want the perfect look and you might not even have any idea what that is. Artists are visual. Paint them a picture of your wedding day, your personal style, grooms likes and dislikes, wedding colors, details etc. Show them an image of yourself (with and without makeup), your dress and a couple makeup ideas. Ask them to show you some images of what they would do based on your look. This helps you know that they are on the same page. If you feel confident with the artist and trust the references or reviews BOOK ASAP. Don't let this opportunity slip away and check that item off your list. Boom! And it's on to the next one.

But maybe you are not completely confident or have some concerns. This is when you MUST make an appointment for your consultation and bridal trial. Bring images and make sure to explain what you like about each image.

For example lets say you love all the images below and want your artist to create your look from them.

An artist could come up with ANY range of colors, styles, finishes and techniques for the images above. Communication here is key. I have seen MANY groupings of images like the one above and it is the artists job to dig deeper into WHY the client likes each image. I love seeing a range of images with different elements so don't steer away from choosing multiple ones to discuss with your artist. Just make sure to communicate what you like and what you don't like about each. Hopefully we have helped ease the stress of selecting your hair and makeup artist and given you some tools to confidently check those items off your list. Remember a great artist can help guide you toward the look you want and steer you away from elements that might not suit your look or style. This is where an artist's thousands of hours of practice, application of color theory, technical training and product knowledge really make a bride shine! Unless you want to be matte and not shine and that's ok too :)
